Jobless rate falls in October

Published November 20, 2009

DeKalb County’s unemployment rate remained relatively unchanged in October, after breaking a 25-year high in September.

October’s rate is 14.4 percent, compared to 14.9 percent in September. The rate has more than doubled since last year at this time, when it was 6 percent.

The current rate represents about 4.059 unemployed people in DeKalb County, down slightly from September when there reports showed 4,219 unemployed people in the county. September’s figure inched above the highest unemployment rate reported in DeKalb since January 1984, when it climbed to 14.8 percent.

Unemployment rates increased statewide. Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees announced Friday that Alabama’s October unemployment rate rose to 10.9 percent, up from September’s rate of 10.7 percent.

The figure represents 226,790 unemployed persons. Sectors showing gains were government; professional and business services; trade, transportation and utilities and educational and health services. Sectors showing losses were financial activities, manufacturing, other services and natural resources and mining.

“While we did experience a slight increase in the unemployment rate, I am proud to announce that Alabama is already paying federal extension benefits to those claimants who quality,” Surtess said. “This extension was only signed into law on Nov. 6, so that represents a less than two week turnaround time on distributing these much needed dollars.”

Surtees said that, to date, about 12,000 Alabamians are eligible for this most recent federal extension of benefits.

“Once again, I’d like to encourage unemployed Alabamians to be patient with us as we distribute these funds,” Surtees said. “We are doing everything possible to get these funds circulating in Alabama’s economy as quickly as we can. Filing online is the best way to speed up the process.”

Claimants can certify online at dir.alabama.gov or by calling (800) 752-7389.
