Local farmers getting help
Published July 31, 2009
About 41 local farmers will receive funds to help clean up after a tornado struck Sylvania and Powell in April.
DeKalb County will get $110,000 from the Emergency Conservation Program.
“We had adjusters come out, and we did an assessment of each farm that put in for help,” said Glen McGee, DeKalb County executive director of USDA Farm Service Agency. “I then put in the request for relief funds based on my reports.”
The money will be used to remove debris, restore fences, grade and shape land and repair conservation structures that were damaged.
McGee said it will be help to many of the farmers.
“Some of them will get some pretty good money,” McGee said. “It will be a big help to them.”
McGee said the main problem in DeKalb County was damaged fences and debris removal from fields.
“We’ll send out a letter to the 41 who applied,” McGee said. “They’ll have to provide paperwork to receive reimbursement.”
