Children get special tour in honor of Craig
Published November 16, 2009
Two of Brant Craig’s interests in life were the promotion and support of both the Big Oak Ranch and Tigers for Tomorrow.
The two entities got together Sunday to celebrate the former DeKalb County commissioner, who died earlier this year due to illness.
About 140 children and residents at the Big Oak Ranch were treated to a free tour of Tigers for Tomorrow in Collinsville, complete with lunch. It’s something the exotic animal preserve’s co-owner Sue Steffens wanted to do to honor Craig and his efforts in working with both organizations.
“Brant had been such an inspiration helping us move forward and we knew the Big Oak Ranch was near and dear to his heart,” Steffens said. “It’s hard to leave a place like I did in Florida, where you know everybody. Brant came over and was so interested in what we were doing. I knew him not as a politician. I knew him as a friend.”
Steffens said she met Craig about four and a half years ago when Tigers for Tomorrow took up just 40 acres in Collinsville. Now at 140 acres and growing, she said it was Craig’s interest in the last-stop animal preserve that helped along the way.
Craig’s widow, Susan, was a special guest at Tigers for Tomorrow on Sunday to witness the tours and lunch for the Big Oak Ranch children.
“I know Brant would be so honored with what they are doing,” Susan Craig said. “This is two of his loves. He loved the Big Oak Ranch and was so interested in what was going on at Tigers for Tomorrow.”
Split into two groups, Tigers for Tomorrow Director of Animal Care and Operations Wilbur McCauley led the children on guided tours of the sanctuary, stopping often to give them an in-depth overview of the lions, tigers, bears and other animals kept there.
“We wanted you to see something that Brant Craig felt was so important,” McCauley told the group. “He was beneficial to both you and us.”
