Tigers in midst of moving

Published February 2, 2010

The owners of Tigers for Tomorrow Exotic Animal Preserve are in the middle of relocating several big animals, but need some help.

Last week, owners and volunteers with the preserve in Collinsville successfully moved two female tigers, Pride and Glory, to their new 1,000-square-feet enclosure from the Lookout Mountain Zoo in Mentone. A 2-year-old black bear, Bear Bryan, also moved in next door to the tigers in the third phase of an expansion on the west side of the preserve.

“The cats loaded easy enough and the little bear was coaxed with sweets into his transport,” said Tigers for Tomorrow owner Sue Steffens. “All of the animals seem to be settling into their new home well and adjusting to the new surroundings.”

A red fox and a lynx were also part of the move, Steffens said. Recently, the two animals were spayed and taken to the preserve. The fox now lives with Simba, another red fox that lives at the preserve. The lynx is still recovering from surgery and will live with preserve resident lynx Simba once she is cleared to leave quarantine.

“The foxes are getting along just great; they sleep in the den box together,” Steffens said.

Steffens said thanks to the help of the Elinor Patterson Baker Foundation, the Folke H. Peterson Foundation, Lee Energy Solutions in Crossville and Wal-Mart and Lowe’s in Fort Payne, the animals were moved to their new homes.

But there’s work left to do. Steffens said two tigers remain at the zoo that closed to the public in September. The large cats have to be moved to the preserve by March 1.

Steffens said the preserve needs about $25,000 to build an enclosure for the tigers and is asking for donations from the public.
