Inmate escapes work detail, caught
Published November 9, 2009
A DeKalb County inmate escaped from custody Monday and was found hours later.
Sheriff Jimmy Harris said inmate Ronald E. Pick slipped away from a work detail on County Road 731 near Sequoyah Caverns around 7:30 a.m., but authorities had him back in custody in less than three hours.
Harris said Pick asked a work corrections officer permission to use the restroom, left the work site and didn’t return. After about 10 minutes, Harris said the corrections officer called in an escape.
“At that time, we contacted the St. Clair Correctional Facility K-9 Unit and the Alabama Department of Public Safety helicopter unit and asked them to help with the search,” Harris said. “Deputy Red Taylor was also flying in a fixed-wing plane over the area to try to locate Pick.”
Harris said a ground search was also organized, and deputies Sherry Johnson, Jeffery Bain, and reserve deputy Rickey Higdon spotted Pick around 10:07 a.m. Pick was on the run for a grand total of about 2 hours and 37 minutes, Harris said.
Pick is in jail on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and failure to appear in court. He now faces an additional charge of third-degree escape.
“We would like to thank all the agencies that helped with this search for their quick response and support,” Harris said. “Without the assistance of all agencies, we likely would have not been able to apprehend the escapee as quickly as it happened.”
The inmates were cleaning up on the county road after the weekend’s Battle of Missionary Ridge at Sequoyah Caverns.
