Work to begin on Sylvania Gap
Published September 23, 2009
Work may begin on Sylvania Gap as soon as next week, according to DeKalb County Engineer Ben Luther.
Luther told the DeKalb County Commission final recommendations from the geotechnical consulting group are in, and the county is ready to go to work.
“The recommendations are that we go in and excavate the site on the slope,” Luther said. “We’ll stack a bunch of rip rap and rebuild that field area on the slope. It’ll have an under drain pipe to help get water away from the site. We’ll then repave, put the guardrail up and open the road.”
Luther said, initially, it was thought the final recommendations would have to be sent to FEMA for approval since the agency is helping fund the repairs.
“Since we have a engineer design, FEMA said they would fix it,” Luther said. “That saves us some time.”
But, time may not be on the side of the Road Department with all of the recent heavy rains.
“The rain hasn’t really caused much difference in the original damage to the road,” Luther said. “The rain will slow us down, but it doesn’t seem like the site has gotten any worse.”
Luther could not give an estimated time of completion for the project.
“I don’t have an idea right now,” Luther said. “Once we get it excavated, it’s going to be a slow process of stacking the material in there. It will take a couple of months to do it and a lot of that will depend on the weather.”
Sylvania Gap Road has been closed since May 4 after heavy rains caused a portion of the road to slide and the damage became too severe to patch.
The recent heavy rains caused part of County Road 631 in Mentone to wash away.
“I believe that one is back open,” Luther said.
At the East Fork of Little River Canyon and County Road 635, Luther said the bridge there was topped off and the top deck came off of the bridge.
“They have closed that bridge and are replacing the top on it right now,” Luther said.
Other than those two cases, Luther said he hasn’t seen any significant flood damage in DeKalb County.
