Youngsters share thoughts of holiday
Published July 4, 2009
Centuries ago, our founding fathers fought for our freedom and independence.
Out of the fire, they stood strong and won us our liberty.
Today, Americans will celebrate the courage shown by those who fought for us years and years ago.
The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, marking the day for celebrations nationwide to commemorate the adoption.
Many of DeKalb County residents will partake in Independence Day festivities.
According to the Encarta Online Encyclopedia, the first celebration was on July 8, 1776 in Philadelphia.
The declaration was read aloud, bells rang and bands played.
Today, celebrations include music, cookouts, fireworks displays and patriotic speeches.
Decorations are placed on many homes and buildings and Old Glory flies high.
Six students in the Fort Payne Extended Day Program talked about what they do on July 4 and what America’s birthday means to them.
Will Scott is a first-grader at Wills Valley Elementary School. He said he does a lot with his family for the holiday.
“We watch fireworks and go camping and swimming,” Scott said.
Fourth-grader Jake Newton and there is nothing like going to the lake.
“I love going to the lake with my family,” Newton said. “We shoot fireworks with friends and cookout hamburgers and hot dogs.”
Rufus Evans, a third-grader at Williams Avenue Elementary School said his July 4 is full of fun.
“I play Runescape with my friends,” Evans said. “I also play tag with my dad and I am the champ of the house.”
Aside from the holiday fun, second-grader Molly Mince said she understands the meaning of the most important day in America.
“July 4 means that I love America,” Mince said. “I’m happy we get to celebrate our freedom.”
Second-grader Bowen Brown said he is looking forward to celebrating the fourth of July with his family by eating hot dogs and shooting fireworks and Kaelyn Mosher said she is excited to celebrate America’s freedom with hot dogs and fireworks.
Events are going on in both Henagar and Collinsville today.
