Missing mail prompts investigation

Published November 9, 2009

Fort Payne Postmaster Mary Jo Crabtree said Monday a former postal worker is under investigation for allegedly taking mail.

Crabtree would not release the name of the worker, but she said the employee no longer works at the Fort Payne Post Office.

“We had quite a few customers call to report missing mail in the area,” Crabtree said. “The target appeared to be birthday cards, but there were also get-well cards and anniversary cards.”

Crabtree said customers started contacting her in mid-August about the missing mail. She said in a release “the matter is now contained and Fort Payne mail is safe and secure.”

“Fortunately we have a team of top-notch professionals on the case,” Crabtree said. “We are also fortunate to have many employees who are extraordinary in their commitment to serve with integrity and professionalism. I am honored to say that the overwhelming majority of our employees are of such character.”

Crabtree said special agents of the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General are conducting the investigation.
