Town fires magistrate

Published September 23, 2009

The Sylvania Town Council voted 3-2 Tuesday to fire Debbie Lester from her position as town magistrate.

Mayor Mitch Dendy said the vote was actually a ratification of a unilateral action he took last Wednesday, when he fired Lester from her job for “poor work performance.” Council members Tony Goolesby and Chris Owens voted against firing Lester.

On Wednesday, Lester said she would ask for a due process hearing in front of the council, but has yet to officially request the hearing.

Dendy said the town would begin accepting applications immediately to fill the position, and said anyone interested in applying should pick up an application at town hall or drop off a resume there.
