Swine flu shots available Wednesday

Published October 27, 2009

The DeKalb County Health Department will start giving a limited number of doses of swine flu vaccine to people in targeted high-risk groups beginning Wednesday.

Patsy Rains, clinic supervisor at the health department, said swine flu vaccines would be available Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the DeKalb County School’s Coliseum in Rainsville. She said about 800 doses are available for those who fall into targeted high-risk groups.

Vaccine in injectable form will be offered to pregnant women; children 6 months through 4 years old; parents, siblings and caregivers of children less than 6 months old; children 5 to 18 years old who have underlying medical conditions and health care workers.

DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency deputy director Christi Hardin said no person who wants to be vaccinated would be turned away but higher priorities would be given to the targeted groups.

Statewide, the health department has 55,000 doses available at this time.

More is expected, but Alabama and the national are experiencing significant delays in the amount of swine influenza vaccine received. Vaccine supply is short for both private providers and health departments.

“We must target our limited amounts of vaccine to individuals at the highest risk because of the uncertainties in supply we face,” said Dr. Donald Williamson, state health officer. “We ask for your support and understanding at this time. As more vaccine becomes available, our department and other health care providers will begin vaccinating school children and others outside of these target groups.”

The number of vaccine doses sent to each county health department has been allocated based on population, Williamson said.
