26 due IRS refunds in DeKalb

Published November 9, 2009

The Internal Revenue Service is trying to deliver more than $22,000 to people in DeKalb County and $1.85 million to Alabamians that it can’t locate.

IRS spokesman Dan Boone said the tax agency has 1,571 refund checks for Alabamians and 26 for people in DeKalb County that were returned by the U.S. Postal Service due to errors in the mailing addresses. The average size of the DeKalb County checks is $865.

Boone said most of the people with undeliverable checks moved after filing their 2008 tax returns and didn’t leave a forwarding address.

“IRS wants to get these checks to their owners as quickly as possible,” said Boone. “All you have to do is update your address to get your refund check re-issued.”

Boone said taxpayers who haven’t received their refunds from their 2008 tax returns should update their address and then the checks will be sent again. Updating addresses can be done by going to the IRS’ Web site (http://www.IRS.gov) and clicking on “Where’s My Refund.” Or it can be done by calling 1-800-829-1954.

A taxpayer will need a Social Security number, filing status and the amount of the refund shown on the 2008 income tax return.

Boone said once an address is updated, it should take four to six weeks for a refund check to be issued.

Nationwide, the IRS is looking for taxpayers who are due to receive 107,831 refund checks totaling $123.5 million. The average refund check is $1,148, which is up from $900 a year ago.

The IRS reports that undeliverable refunds rose by 16 percent this year. That’s in line with the increased number of refunds issued this year. The IRS attributes that to several changes in the tax laws, including the tax credit for first-time home buyers and the recovery rebate credit.

A year ago in Alabama the IRS was looking for more than 1,500 taxpayers who were due $1.56 million. Boone said most ended up getting their checks. If they didn’t update their address in the fall, then the IRS looked for new addresses when they filed their 2008 returns and used those addresses to reissue the refund checks, he said.

Boone said taxpayers can guard against lost, stolen or undeliverable refund checks by choosing direct deposit when they file tax returns in the future.
