Fyffe Deserves Credit For Taking on Dogs

Published July 1, 2009

While it seems nearly every city and town in DeKalb County has talked about it for years and years, the Fyffe Town Council significantly addressed loose pets recently.

Specifically, Fyffe went after dogs, which Mayor Katy Woodall said have been leading to more and more complaints.

Fyffe’s ordinance is a tough one. Not only does it address loose and vicious dogs, but it also tackles barking or howling dogs. That, we believe, could be difficult for owners to control. However, the town deserves credit for being active with its problem.

The law requires dog owners to make sure animals that are outside are enclosed or chained. Also, owners must notify the public if a dog is loose inside an enclosure.

Failure to meet the requirements leads to a verbal warning for the first offense. After that, fines will come.

Also, DeKalb County animal control can pick up any loose animal in Fyffe.

Creating a law that keeps dogs restrained is one thing. The hard part will be enforcement. Most of us know a law only works if it is strictly and uniformly enforced. If law enforcement heads turn the other way, new law or not, the problem many of the town’s residents are already complaining about will continue.

Residents seem to be in favor of the new ordinance, citing the constant noise or the fear from folks throughout the city.

Managing its animal population is certainly difficult for many cities and towns, especially those in rural aeras like DeKalb. Fyffe took a step toward solving what seems to be a community-wide issue.
