It’s Girl Scout cookie time
Published January 10, 2009
When we hear the words Girl Scout, most of us think cookies.
Those who do are in luck, because it’s time for the Girl Scouts’ annual cookie sale.
Girl Scouts started selling cookies Friday and will continue through March.
Bobby Barone, Troop 401 leader in Fort Payne, said she isn’t worried about the sale.
“I don’t let anything stress me out,” Barone said. “The cookie sale is always an exciting time for me and the girls.”
Barone said she expects cookies sales to be as good or better than past years. Two new flavors will be introduced this year.
“This year, we’ll have the Lemon Chalet Crème and the Dulce de Leche,” Barone said.
The Girl Scouts’ most popular cookie is the Thin Mint followed by the Samoas.
“Tre-foils are the oldest Girl Scout cookie and the Thin Mint comes in second,” Barone said.
Cookies will be sold for $3.50 a box this year, and everyone will have ample chances to pick up their fav-orite cookie.
“People can order from any Girl Scout, and we will also have booth sales starting on Feb. 14,” Barone said.
Barone said her troop will set up booths at places like Kmart, Wal-Mart, Lowe’s and Bruce’s Foodland. She said the booth sales always have a good turnout.
“The booth sales are good for people who enjoy the cookies but may not know a Girl Scout they can order from,” Barone said. “The booth sales will give those people an opportunity to pick up some cookies.”
Seventy percent of the revenue produced by cookie sales stay in the area the cookies were sold. The other 30 percent goes to the bakers.
Natalie Pope, with Troop 401, said she loves to sell Girl Scout cookies.
“I get to meet new people,” Pope said.
Pope was one of the top sellers last year along with Kendra Childress, who said selling the cookies is one of her favorite things, too.
“It’s fun, and you get prizes,” Childress said.
Childress said she hopes to be a top seller this year.
Girl Scout cookies are not only good on their own but there are also recipes available online that uses the cookies.
