BOYS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: SHS looks strong

The season isn’t even a month old, but Sylvania’s boys are already closing in on their victory total from 2008-09.
Zach King scored 19 points Saturday and led the Rams past North Sand Mountain 84-59 in the Valley Head Thanksgiving high school basketball tournament.
Sylvania (4-1) went 2-0 in the tournament, picking up a 65-41 victory over Collinsville in the opening round Wednesday.
The Rams finished 6-19 a year ago but are showing signs that this season may be different.
“The kids are playing exceptionally hard,” Rams coach Glenn Haynes said. “That’s what I’m most pleased with. We’ve got different kids leading us in scoring. On the defensive end of the floor, we’re giving a lot of effort.”
Leighton Wright closed with 15 points for Sylvania, and Donavan Dalton finished with 14. Justin Everett collected 13.
Nick Baker drained four 3-pointers and paced North Sand Mountain with 24 points. Kennedy Marion netted 12.
No tournament champion was crowned.
FYFFE: Class 2A, No. 7 Fyffe closed 1-1 in the Valley Head tournament, beating the host school 76-42 on Wednesday before falling to 3A, No. 6 Pisgah 72-62 on Saturday.
The Red Devils (2-1) led by four points with five minutes left against the Eagles.
Ryan Tramel finished with 15 points for Fyffe. Josh Barksdale scored 11, and Taylor Thrash had 10.
Corey Wheeler (22 points), Josh Perialas (15) and Justin Lewis (11) were top scorers for Pisgah (2-1).
VALLEY HEAD: The Tigers fell to 1-3 with the loss to Fyffe.
COLLINSVILLE: The Panthers dropped games to Geraldine and Sylvania at Valley Head and are 0-4.
CROSSVILLE: The 3A, No. 3 Lions split two games Saturday in a tournament at Faith Christian in Anniston.
Crossville (4-1) fell to Sacred Heart 51-50 in the championship game. The Lions trailed 45-28 heading into the final quarter but pulled even at 50-all on a bucket by Anthony Roque with about 30 seconds left. Corey Dudley made the winning free throw for Sacred Heart with 10 seconds remaining.
Justin Mayo closed with 19 points and eight rebounds for Crossville. Kole Richards scored 13 points, and Brad Smothers finished with 10. John Williamson dished out five assists.
Crossville defeated Donoho 64-40 in an opener. Mayo collected 21 points and 10 boards. Richards collected 17 points, and Juan Chapina had 10.
PLAINVIEW: Jacob Crowell scored 24 points as Plainview picked up its first victory of the season, downing Douglas 58-53 in the Plainview Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday.
Taylor Horton closed with 13 points and eight boards (five offensive) for the Bears (1-3), and Bryar Buchanan added 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Josh Walker (18 points), Kyle Buchanan (14) and Tyler Farris (10) were top scorers for Douglas).
Catholic-Huntsville edged Plainview 47-43 on Wednesday.
IDER: The Hornets opened their season with a 1-2 showing in a tournament at Dade County (Ga.).
Gordon Lee (Ga.) handed Ider an 83-57 setback Saturday. Cole Spurgeon and Corey Crabtree paced the Hornets with 11 points apiece. Ryan Culbreth led Dade County with 26.
Ider defeated Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (Ga.) 73-62 on Friday.
Dylon Overdear paced Ider with 19 points. Crabtree scored 17. Mark Young collected 12, and Spurgeon netted 11.
North Murray (Ga.) downed Ider 84-74 on Wednesday.
