Tellabration returns to Fort Payne

Published November 19, 2009

Alabama National Storyteller Renee Morrison refers to storytelling as “writing on the wind.”

Morrison and several other storytellers will gather at Little River Canyon Center on Saturday for the annual Tellabration storytelling celebration.

“It’s a nation and international event,” Morrison said. “It’s a sanctioned event by the National Storytelling Network.”

Morrison said many different stories will be told, from humorous to holiday, and all of them are family-friendly.

The storytelling celebration is traditionally held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving all over the world.

“In every country and nation, there will be little groups listening and celebrating storytelling,” Morrison said. “There will be millions of listeners and storytellers all over the world at the same time.”

Morrison said in today’s world where so much technology is prevalent, it’s more important than ever to keep storytelling alive.

“It’s important to have this event because in the time of so much technology it’s of utmost importance that our future generations learn the storytelling traditions from the older generations,” Morrison said. “Storytelling is a treasure and I think one of my favorite things is that it’s a very intimate situation because there is nothing between the listener and the storyteller.”

Tellabration will begin at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children and students.
