Police crack $200,000 theft case
Published September 28, 2009
What started with charges stemming from a $20,000 bad check allegedly written in Fort Payne in July has culminated in more than $200,000 in stolen property recovered across North Alabama and Southern Tennessee.
Fort Payne Police Commissioner Ron Ogletree said Monday the unidentified suspect who allegedly wrote the check for a tractor led 14 law enforcement agencies, including Addison, Birmingham, Bessemer, Sumiton, Trussville and Walker, Winston and Cullman counties, to the apparent stolen property. He said investigators with the Alabama Department of Agriculture were also involved in the investigation.
“I want to make sure our detective division gets all the credit on this,” Ogletree said. “They broke the case. All of the law enforcement agencies had wonderful cooperation throughout this investigation. Results like these are the result of when law enforcement agencies work together as a team.”
Ogletree said a press conference is set for today, and police would release further details at that time.
