Armed robbery suspects caught

Published July 20, 2009

Police arrested two people Monday in Monteagle, Tenn. and charged them in connection with the alleged armed robbery of a person staying at a Fort Payne motel a week before.

Tonya Marie Amonson, 24, of Fort Payne and Bradley Matthew Gilreath, 26 of Fort Payne were each charged with first-degree robbery.

Fort Payne Police Commissioner Ron Ogletree said Gilreath and Amonson allegedly robbed a woman staying at the Mountain View Motel on July 13. He said $900, a cell phone and prescription medication were allegedly taken.

Ogletree said the victim was allegedly hit in the head with the gun. The victim was treated and released at DeKalb Regional Medical Center.

Ogletree said Monteagle police officers pulled over a vehicle driven by Amonson, and identified her as a suspect in the July 13 robbery in Fort Payne.

After questioning Amonson, Monteagle officers learned that Gilreath was also in the immediate area. Ogletree said officers determined Gilreath was apparently armed with a handgun and had claimed he would “would not be taken peacefully.”

After learning that Amonson and Gilreath were staying at a Days Inn in Monteagle, police there went to the motel to arrest Gilreath, but spotted him driving a pickup truck near the motel, Ogletree said.

He said Gilreath attempted to outrun the officers, but they were able to stop him and arrest him without incident.

Ogletree said police found a portable methamphetamine lab in Gilreath’s truck, and a subsequent search of the room he and Amonson were renting at the Monteagle Days Inn turned up a handgun believed to be the same one used in the alleged armed robbery at the Mountain View Motel.

“We wish to thank Monteagle Police Chief Virgil McNeese and officers from his department for their excellent police work that led to the arrest of two fugitives,” Ogletree said.

Both Amonson and Gilreath were taken to the Marion County Jail and await extradition to DeKalb County.
