Hot spots emerge in Antique Alley
Published May 13, 2009
The annual search for bargains and rare items starts today throughout DeKalb County.
The 12th annual U.S. 11 Antique Alley and Yard Sale continues through Sunday. DeKalb County is included in the 502-mile stretch from Meridian, Miss. to Bristol Va.
DeKalb County Tourist Association Director John Dersham said there are three hot spots throughout the county shoppers won’t want to skip.
Dersham said the first is at Collinsville Trade Day. This areas, known for its sales on Saturdays, will be open from today to Sunday for Antique Alley and feature hundreds of vendors.
Dersham said another must-stop is at the Highway 81 intersection with U.S. 11 between Collinsville and Fort Payne otherwise known as Killian’s Corner. He said a large number of sellers set up in this large field each year.
Dersham said a third hot spot is near Hammondville at the intersection of Highway 117 and U.S. 11 that always attracts a large crowd.
“We are excited because you have to remember a majority of the people coming through here are not local and will be bringing in tourism dollars,” Dersham said. “We are also hoping a lot of people that will be here will go on and visit the Rhododendron Festival in Mentone. Those two events this weekend will be huge for tourism.”
Dersham said he anticipates a good crowd for the event.
“Antique Alley and the World’s Longest Yard Sale in August are the two events we get the most requests for information,” Dersham said. “They always get the most calls, emails and Web site hits. This is big business for us.”
Dersham encourages local businesses to take advantage of the thousands of visitors who will be coming through the area during the event.
“There are quite a few people set up already,” he said on Wednesday.
Antique Alley includes five states, 24 counties and 77 small towns.
