Beware post cards asking for money
Published March 2, 2009
Residents in DeKalb County could be at the center of a scam, according to the Better Business Bureau.
The scam involves residents receiving a green post card, similar to those used by the U.S. Postal Service.
“The card is titled “Parcel Tracking Notice”,” said BBB Regional Vice President Angie Craig said, “and says that they are trying to reach the consumer to claim a parcel.”
Craig said the consumer is instructed to call a toll-free number and arrange for the package to be delivered after a processing and delivery fee of $6.95 is paid.
“The fee can be paid only by telephone and only by credit card,” Craig said. “The card also states that the package is jewelry worth $50.”
According to Craig, some consumers called the number and said they were told they would receive a necklace valued at $50 or more and are told the necklace will be released once the $6.95 is paid and consumers are asked to give the company a credit card number.
“Additionally, consumers said not only did the company want them to pay the fee, but also wanted them to enroll in other programs that require payment of a monthly fee to get other trinkets and products,” Craig said.
Consumers are cautioned to be careful in protecting their credit card information.
“Do not give out your credit card number to anyone by phone or elsewhere unless you have initiated the purchase or transaction and know for sure with whom you are doing business,” Craig said.
