‘Man vs. Wild’ in DeKalb
Published August 13, 2009
Extreme adventurer Bear Grylls, known for his daring survival techniques on The Discovery Channel’s popular “Man vs. Wild,” recently put his knowledge to the test in DeKalb County.
True Adventure Sports owner Israel Partridge said The Discovery Channel contacted him in December to do scout for the episode.
“We were asked to do some scouting and to find some raging waters and scaling cliffs, wild animal areas and an area that would be dangerous to the average person,” Partridge said.
In January, Partridge began taking pictures and documenting different areas, and Grylls and his team came to the area in February to shoot for the series.
The episode will air Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Grylls, who served three-years with the Special Air Force and a special forces of the British Army, spent about a week filming in and around DeKalb and Cherokee counties.
According to the episode guide, Grylls is dropped by helicopter at the top of a 700-foot canyon and then climbs down a tree and builds a raft out of debris. The raft also carries him over a waterfall.
The show’s description also says Grylls encounters a forest fire, a wild boar and gets trapped in a cave with no light.
In his blog, Grylls said an interesting moment occurs when he is picked up by Alabama State Troopers for hitchhiking a ride on a logging truck at the end of the episode.
Grylls and his cameraman, Simon Reay, strand themselves in remote locations and then have to survive and find a way out.
According to discoverychannel.com, Grylls and Reay do receive assistance when they are in life-threatening situations and are sometimes given situations so Grylls can demonstrate survival techniques.
