Collinsville senior named young hero
Published May 12, 2009
A Collinsville High School senior will be recognized today as a young hero.
The Alabama Public Television Young Heroes Awards recognizes five Alabama high school students each year based on courage, determination, volunteerism, academic excellence and perseverance in the face of adversity.
Pablo Zuniga was chosen from a pool of about 200 nominees to receive the award.
The program recognizes Alabama high school students who are active in the community, maintain good grades and who have overcome adversity during their lifetime.
Zuniga was nominated by his guidance counselor at the DeKalb County Technology Center, Hazel Haynes, who described Zuniga as an artist, a caretaker, an industrious worker and friend to others.
Zuniga and his younger sister grew up in a home absent of a mother, and his father works in a different town.
Zuniga and his sister live with Ms. Ann, their adopted grandmother.
Zuniga runs the household and cares for his sister during the week, and the two also care for the grandmother who suffers from severe arthritis.
On a daily basis, Zuniga takes care of his sister’s needs, takes her to school and church while their father is away and also takes care of Ms. Ann.
Zuniga’s life has included poverty, abuse and neglect. He and his family even once lived in a farm silo.
Johnny Mack Edwards, who attends the same church as Zuniga, said there is much to say about the high school senior.
“He is a determined young man who wants to make his life better by getting an education,” Edwards said.
Zuniga helps out at school by translating for Hispanic students and taking new students on campus tours.
“His advice has been a great help to these students,” Collinsville High guidance counselor Leslie Brown said.
As a winner, Zuniga will receive $2,500 scholarship, a laptop computer and $100 gift certificate to Books-A-Million.
They will also be featured in Alabama’s Stars in Education live broadcast today at 7 p.m. on APT.
