Stolen mail being sent

Published November 18, 2009

Postal Service investigators have recovered about 2,500 pieces of missing mail and are in the process of sending it out now, according to a postal official.

Sam Montalvo, public information officer with the Postal Inspector General’s Office southeastern division, said a former Fort Payne postal worker is under investigation for taking the mail. Montalvo would not release the name of the worker, but said that worker has resigned. He said the case would be presented to a federal prosecutor to decide what charges should be filed, but said it would most likely be federal mail theft.

Fort Payne Postmaster May Jo Crabtree earlier said customers began calling the post office back around mid-August to report missing mail in the area.

“The target appeared to be birthday cards and anniversary cards,” Crabtree said. But there were also get-well cards and anniversary cards.”

She earlier said, in a release, “the matter is now contained and Fort Payne mail is safe and secure. Fortunately we have a team of top-notch professionals on the case. We are also fortunate to have many employees who are extraordinary in their commitment to serve with integrity and professionalism. I am honored to say that the overwhelming majority of our employees are of such character.”
