DeSoto Falls shows its anger
Published September 22, 2009
Raging waters carried an unmanned pontoon boat and two kayaks over DeSoto Falls in Fort Payne on Monday.
Mentone resident Kathy Casler, who happened to be visiting the falls with her husband at the time the pontoon went over, caught the drama on camera.
“We went to see the falls because we had heard it was spectacular from all the rain, and while we were there, I noticed the pontoon coming downriver towards the falls,” Casler said. “My first thought was that I hoped there was nobody on it and, after it came closer into view, it was obvious there wasn’t. Then I thought that I wish there was some way to prevent it from going over the falls, but it was too dangerous to try so I just snapped some photos with my iPhone.”
Casler said another visitor to the falls told her two unmanned kayaks had been swept over the falls only a few minutes before Casler arrived. She said the pontoon dropped over the falls, hit the rocks below and shattered to pieces.
A spokesperson for DeSoto State Park said the pontoon belonged to James Roland Hendon, of Mentone. The boat apparently either floated off its dock or the rope snapped from the weight of the water.
Casler said she visited the falls about six weeks ago and was disappointed to find hardly any water flowing over it at all, but got more excitement than she bargained for Monday.
