DeSoto Mills set to close
Published November 3, 2006
A letter was sent to employees of DeSoto Mills in Fort Payne on Thursday saying the effective shutdown of the plant will take place in January.
The announcement comes as Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Haleyville, is attempting to bring pressure to the Bush administration to honor a commitment to protect domestic sock manufacturing interests, especially in Fort Payne, once known as “the sock capital of the world.”
The administration promised the protections in exchange for Aderholt’s vote in favor of the Central America Free Trade Agreement, but has yet to deliver. Most U.S. sock manufacturers opposed passage of CAFTA, though some supported the measure.
According to the letter sent Thursday, 220 DeSoto employees will be “permanently terminated.”
The letter references an earlier announcement that the plant will phase out its finishing operations as part of a “corporate restructuring program.” According to the letter the DeSoto finishing and support areas will being closing in about 60 days time.
The letter, singed by Kenneth Blackwell, director of manufacturing for DeSoto, says it’s anticipated layoffs will begin on Jan. 12 and finishing and support operations should be completely closed by March 31.
Blackwell referred direct questions about the shutdown timetable to the legal department of Russell Corporation, which owns DeSoto. Calls to that department were not immediately returned.
