New engineer needed
Published December 27, 2006
The DeKalb County Commission posted for hire the newly vacant county engineer position during Tuesday’s regularly scheduled commission meeting.
Former county engineer Bill Dean was to begin his retirement this week following the Christmas holiday, but he made a final appearance at the meeting to give an update on road projects and to recommend that commission members fill his vacancy as soon as possible.
Commission President Sid Holcomb said he and county Administrator Matt Sharp had already been discussing the position.
“We would like to go ahead and post this,” Holcomb said. “We would like to have someone available for the position by the time we have our next meeting.”
The commission approved the posting of the vacancy. The members then anointed Ben Luther, assistant county engineer, to take over as acting county engineer until the county hires a replacement. Luther has been assistant engineer for the county for several years. Dean was county engineer since January 2005 and had been in some form of construction all of his adult life. The commission will meet again for the first time in 2007 on Jan. 9 at the Activities Building in Fort Payne.
Dean also offered an update on several county road projects. He said that County Road 92 resurfacing has been initiated and they are awaiting a response about their plans that were sent to the state Department of Transportations. County Road 140 and 89 resurfacing continues and work on County Road 189 was reinitiated following inspection by ALDOT in October.
Tom Broyles with the road department also addressed the commission to give a maintenance update. Broyles said the road department now has all of its new graders out and being used. Broyles also reminded members that the cost of equipment for the department for the upcoming year has increased. He said the prices increase every year.
