DeSoto’s Independence Day celebration

DeSoto State Park is hosting its annual Independence Day Celebration atop of Lookout Mountain on July 5 and 6 at the DeSoto State Park.

The event will kick off on July 5 with the Splish and Splash Pool Party from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m.

According to DeSoto State Park Naturalist Brittney Hughes, this annual event is set for adults as well as children.

Admission to the Splish and Splash Pool Party in the Olympic-size pool is $1 per person, Hughes said.

The Independence Day parade is set for July 6 at 3 p.m. commencing at the DeSoto’s Park headquarters and ending at the DeSoto’s Improved Campground.

“Decorate your vehicle to show your spirit,” officials said.

According to park officials, anyone wishing to ride along needs to meet at the DeSoto’s Park headquarters at 2:30 p.m.

Among the festivities will be a flag making contest that is open to all ages.

“My personal favorite part of the Independence Day event is seeing the art made by adults and kids for the homemade flag making contest,” Hughes said.

Information including materials and flag making rules will be available at the campground pavilion starting July 3.

According to Hughes, the park officials supply a whiteboard and glue. However, participants can use natural materials to create “phenomenal flags,” this excludes anything living.

“We have several examples mounted in DeSoto’s Benefield Interpretive Nature Center,” Hughes said. “Stop by and see some of the creativity and get inspiration to make your own.”

According to officials, flags must be turned in at the DeSoto’s Nature Center by July 6 no later than 9 a.m. to be judged.

Following the parade will be an Ice Cream Social commencing at 4 p.m. where the winner of the flag making contest will be announced.

Hughes said the park staff encourages visitors to sit, relax, eat homemade ice cream, and meet the fellow guest at the DeSoto State Park.

“Bring your own comfortable camp chair as seating is limited,” officials said.

According to Hughes, the flag contest usually sees around a dozen or so entries, and the pool party and ice cream social participation is generally between 100 to 150 people.
