ATHENS– Alabama Connections Academy (ALCA), a full-time statewide public virtual school, has been authorized by the Limestone County School District to serve students in grades K-12 throughout the state beginning in the 2017-18 school year. Enrollment for the virtual school opened on May 2nd.
“We are thrilled to be working with Connections Academy, which has a great track record of quality education and student success, to open Alabama Connections Academy,” said Dr. Tom Sisk, Limestone County School District Superintendent. “Limestone County is committed to expanding student access to quality education no matter where in the state they reside, and this new online school will offer students an individualized learning opportunity tailored to their unique strengths and needs.”
ALCA will offer students Alabama-certified teachers, an award-winning curriculum, technology tools, engaging electives, and in-person and online social experiences, creating a supportive and successful online learning program for families who want an individualized approach to education. Learning from home, students will work closely with licensed teachers using detailed daily lesson plans that can be personalized to meet individual student needs. Curriculum, from the nationally recognized Connections Academy® program, will combine high-quality resources from leading publishers with cutting-edge, yet easy-to-use, technology tools and hands-on materials. A parent, or another adult “Learning Coach,” helps to monitor student progress in the home.
Students residing in any county throughout the state of Alabama are eligible to enroll full-time in Alabama Connections Academy. Parents interested in providing their child with an innovative, technology-enhanced Kindergarten experience may also consider enrolling in ALCA.
A virtual school approach can serve a wide range of students, including those who are significantly ahead or behind in the classroom, those who need a flexible schedule or learn at a different pace from their peers, and those who need more individualized attention or live in isolated rural settings. Homebound and previously home-schooled students can also thrive in the Alabama Connections Academy program. As a public school, there are no fees or tuition to attend and all students are required to take the same state assessments as traditional public school students. Students graduating from Alabama Connections Academy will earn an Alabama High School Diploma.
The curriculum and other services for Alabama Connections Academy are contracted through Connections Education, a leading provider of high-quality, highly accountable online learning that has been supporting schools for over 15 years. Connections Education is accredited by AdvancED.
In preparation for its inaugural academic year, the school will establish an office within Limestone County School District and hire a school leader and team of certified teachers.
