It won’t be long before ground is broken on a new gym at Crossville High School.

DeKalb County Schools Facilities Manager Ricky Butts said the contracts are in the final stages and work will start as soon as the paperwork is signed.

“The architect said it’s an 11-month job,” Butts said. “So, we should be playing basketball in it in November [2016].”

Butts said the$3.17 million gym will be 12,455-square-feet and include four locker rooms, two coach’s offices and a hospitality room. The building will have heat and air conditioning and seat 1,200 people.

Girls basketball Coach Randy Peppers said the new gym will be a welcome addition to the campus.

“It was built in 1951,” Peppers said. “We’ve been in it so long to be the biggest school in the county. It’s not big enough for an assembly for grades 9-12. We’d have to break students into two groups for an assembly. The talk is they’re going to try and get it ready a little early, maybe September. Maybe even before school starts.”

Peppers said the new gym will be built on the current practice football field. He said a new practice field will be built behind the new gym.

He said the old gym will be converted to a middle school athletic facility.
