FORT PAYNE – The Fort Payne Lady Wildcats hosted a varsity softball tournament over the weekend, where they picked up four wins on Friday and Saturday.

Friday saw the Lady ‘Cats defeat 7A Gadsden City 10-0. Fort Payne then defeated D.A.R. 4-3, Arab 11-1 and Geraldine by a score of 5-1.

Here are recaps of those four wins for the Lady Wildcats:



The Lady Wildcats dominated this one from start to finish on Friday.

Fort Payne took the lead in their half of the first when Emily Ellis and Anna McElrath both reached on errors and came around to score on a passed ball.

Addison Eason then led off the bottom of the second with a single to the left side before Braden Barksdale tripled her home.

Three batters later, Ellis doubled home Barksdale to make the lead 4-0.

Fort Payne padded their lead even further in the fourth when Eason, Barksdale and Presley Smith led off with three straight base hits and came around to score.

Hannah Buffington later capped off the inning with a 2-out solo shot on a line drive that landed past the left-field wall.

The Lady ‘Cats then added a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to end the game by mercy rule.

Eason pitched a 6-inning gem in the circle for Fort Payne. She struck out six, walked none and gave up just two base hits. She was also 2-for-3 at the dish and scored twice.

Barksdale was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.

Ellis was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.


D.A.R. 3

Fort Payne won their 5-inning matchup with D.A.R. in dramatic fashion with a 3-run rally in their last chance at the plate.

The Lady ‘Cats trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Taylor Camp led off with a double to center field.

Three batters later, Laci Blankenship ripped a 2-out single to the left side. Blankenship then stole second to put both runners in scoring position.

Emily Ellis then came through in the clutch when she ripped a game-tying, 2-RBI single up the middle that scored both Camp and Blankenship to knot the score at 3-all.

Hannah Buffington then hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped and scored Ellis from first to seal the win in walk-off fashion for Fort Payne.

Ellis went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and Blankenship, Camp and Presley Smith all had one hit each.



Fort Payne’s bats caught fire early and often in this one with five runs in the first and six in the third.

Each of the Lady Wildcats’ first five batters reached base in the first and four of them scored.

Mia Traylor later drove in Madison Medckie on a sacrifice fly to center field to make the lead 5-0 after an inning of play.

Fort Payne’s 6-run rally in the third started with singles from Eason, Medckie, Camp and Traylor. Hannah Buffington capped it off with a 2-out, 3-RBI double.

Blankenship, Ellis, Buffington, Eason and Camp all had two hits each in the win. Gracie McCurdy struck out one, walked one and gave up one unearned run on four hits in four innings pitched.



A 4-run rally in the first inning gave the Lady ‘Cats the lead for good in their matchup with Geraldine.

Laci Blankenship and Emily Ellis led off the bottom of the first with a single and a walk before Hannah Buffington blasted a 3-run homer over the center-field wall.

Addison Eason was then hit by a pitch. Her courtesy runner, Lilly Jackson, moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Anna McElrath and later scored on an RBI single by Madison Medckie.

Fort Payne’s lone other run for the game came when Eason drove in Blankenship with an RBI single up the middle in the second.

Eason struck out two, walked one and gave up just one unearned run on one hit in six frames in the circle. She was also 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI.

Buffington was 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs and Blankenship batted 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
