On Friday, DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said there was a shooting that occurred in Crossville where deputies and officers were dispatched to.
He said officers were dispatched to a residence off County Road 34 in Crossville where the victim, George Allen Murphy, 45, of Crossville, was shot one time in the head from inside the residence.
Murphy was standing on his neighbor’s front porch when the shot came through the closed front door, Harris said.
“The shooting was supposedly an accidental shooting,” Harris said. “We don’t know that for sure right now.
There was a guy who lived next to a family and there had been some problems through the last several months, and he said he was there to sell them firewood. It was a 15-year-old juvenile who accidentally let the gun go off and go through the door and it was actually bird shot but it was close; so, it hit [Murphy’s] eye and went through the back of his head. He’s still alive.”
Murphy is still hospitalized at this time at an undisclosed location, according to the DCSO press release.
He said initially there were conflicting stories at the scene however, he believes by the end of the night they all got their stories “the same way.” The investigator hasn’t received an official statement from Murphy at this time.
“It was a juvenile who lives at the residence who fired the shot,” Harris said. “The case appears to be an accident, but the case is still under investigation.“
He said yesterday there was also an unrelated homicide in Crossville, resulting from domestic violence.
Harris said dispatchers received the call at approximately 2 p.m. of a possible homicide on Alabama 68 in Crossville.
Once on scene, he said deputies and Crossville Police found William Craig Nicks, 42, of Crossville, had been stabbed in an altercation with Austin Dell Gilbert, 27, of Crossville.
Gilbert fled the scene on foot and was apprehended near his residence, where he was arrested and transported to DeKalb County Detention Center, and he was charged with murder.
Nicks was transported to Marshall Medical South where he died due to his injuries.
Harris said DCSO, Crossville Police Department, Geraldine Police Department and Jacksonville State Forensic Science Investigators reported to assist on scene.
