Johnny Lester Townson

A Rainsville man died at the Jackson County Jail on Monday night.

Johnny Lester Townson, 47, was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m. after he was found unresponsive in a holding cell.

Jackson County Sheriff Chuck Phillips said that Townson had been released to go visit a cardiologist in Birmingham.

Upon arrival to the jail, Phillips said that Townson was kept in a holding cell until he could perform a urine test. Phillips said that surveillance video shows Townson falling to the ground in the cell and deputies finding him about an hour later. Phillips said the deputies began performing CPR.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is investigating the death and this is protocol for inmate deaths.

Townson was arrested on Oct. 4 of this year on failure to pay, theft of property and escape charges. He also was arrested on a probation revocation order.

An autopsy is being performed in Birmingham, and the sheriff’s office is still awaiting the results.

No foul play is expected, according to Phillips.
