Local race attracts global participation

Registration for the Rainsville Freedom Run is $35 and is open online until 10 p.m. CST June 13.

Rainsville Freedom Run 5K and 10K annual race is this weekend, June 15 at 8 a.m.

Jerry Clifton, event coordinator, said the number of registrations for runners has increased since this time last year. Clifton said he and other race coordinators are excited about that.

Clifton said runners come to Rainsville from other countries to participate in the Freedom Run.

“We have runners coming from Kenya, Ethiopia, France, Canada, and Ireland,” Clifton said.

According to Clifton, as of now, there are runners coming from 12 different states across the United States.

“We have runners from New York City and as far away as Colorado,” said Clifton.

Clifton also said runners do not have to register before the day of the race. He said runners can register the morning of the race or the night before at the packet pick up location.

“I encourage everyone to continue to register,” Clifton said.

Registration is $35, and participants may register online at rainsvillefreedomfest.racesonline.com. Clifton said online registration will close at 10 p.m. CST on June 13.

“We think we have a real shot to hit that 1,000,” Clifton said.

Clifton said the response from the community has been “phenomenal.”

“Right now, we have $9,000 in door prizes alone and probably half of that, if not more, is cash money,” Clifton said.

This year’s Freedom Run marks its 11th year in Rainsville. Clifton said the event has contributed over $250 thousand to charity.

First place winner of the 10K will receive $1000, 2nd place $800, 3rd place $600, 4th place $400 and 5th place $200.

First place winner of the 5K will receive $600, 2nd place $400, 3rd place $300, 4th place $200 and 5th place $100.

Clifton encourages people to come out and show support for the runners.

“It’s very important for our local community to support the race,” Clifton said.

Clifton said local participants are encouraged to pick up their packets on Friday 14 at Broadway Baptist Church from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. However, packets may also be picked up on the day of the race from 6 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.
