The DeKalb County Board of Education members Monday gave thanks and showed their appreciation to Brenda Vaughn, of Ider, for her 44 years of dedication and service to transporting students to and from school.

DeKalb County Superintendent Jason Barnett said Vaughn has been driving a school bus for the county for 44 years, and he has enjoyed working with her.

“She loves the students, she cares greatly about the students; there is no debating that,” he said. “She’s been very passionate about her job and I wish everyone were as passionate about their job as Mrs. Vaughn is.”

Vaughn is retiring on July 1 from her school bus driver and her tech school bus route driver duties at Ider High School.

Barnett said Vaughn is going to be “sorely missed” and that he is happy for her to see retirement.

Board member Mark Richards thanked Vaughn and expressed his appreciation for her years of service to DeKalb County and its students.

“I thank Mrs. Vaughn, appreciate her and miss her,” Richards said.

Board member Robert Elliot thanked Vaughn and shared a memory he recalled of her driving a school bus he was on.

“She drove a softball bus in 1999 for us, and I remember we loved it because we’d say, “We are going to Oneonta,” and she’d say, “All right let’s go,” Elliot said. “It’s going to be hard not to see a bus and see Mrs. Vaughn driving it. Again, I’d like to thank Brenda [Vaughn] for all of her years, I’ve known her for a lot of years, and I do appreciate her.”
