Around 11:09 a.m. Thursday, April 11, 2019, a park visitor drowned at Little Falls at Little River Canyon National Preserve. The body was recovered at approximately 12:05 p.m. by Fischer Rescue Squad and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Trooper.

A 23 year-old male from Lithia Springs, Georgia was swimming with friends when the incident occurred. Bystanders called 911 and National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Rangers responded to the scene, working in cooperation with several agencies, including Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency, Fort Payne Fire Department, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Fischer Rescue Squad, and DeKalb Ambulance Service. Rescuers were able to locate the victim near the center of the basin at the bottom of the falls.

Little River Canyon National Preserve Acting Superintendent Wade Lewis and park staff express their sincere sympathy to the family.

The incident remains under investigation.
