The Geraldine Police Department is hosting a “Cops and Kids Day” for the community and will offer free food and many activities.

On Saturday, city officials and public safety officers will gather at the Geraldine Town Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. where they will provide a meal, rides, games and tours of the town’s emergency facilities.

The event was developed by former Police Chief Matt Crum and the current Asst. Police Chief Jeff Buckles in hopes to build positive relationships with the local youth by having the community spend the day interacting, playing and eating with local law enforcement.

“It’s to get the kids of Geraldine used to the police here and letting them know that we are their friends and that we’re there to help them,” said Buckles. “It’s also a chance for their parents to meet the local police, as well.”

The police and fire department will have patrol cars and fire engines at the event for the children to see the vehicles up-close. They will also be offering tours for the town hall, police department, fire department and the storm shelter to allow residents to be aware of their emergency facilities.

“It’s a day for the kids to get to know our officers and let them know that they’re their friends and see how things work and also have some fun,” said Mayor Chuck Ables. “We want to let them know that we’re there to help them when they need us.”

Ables said he will be preparing the hot dogs, chips and drinks that are free of charge and a shaved ice truck will be on-site, as well.

Buckles said they will have a bouncy house, water slides, a kiddie train and dunking booth that he will be working throughout the event.

“We’ve got over 100 goody bags with glow-in-the-dark bracelets and cups that say ‘Police are your friends,’ and on the inside of the bracelets it tells how to call 911 for emergencies,” said Buckles.

The city of Geraldine and the event organizers would like to thank the following sponsors for allowing them to provide this free event to the community: Bobby Ledbetter, Changes, CWS Security, Fowlers Insulation, Geraldine Drugs, Geraldine Foodland, Geraldine Hardware, Geraldine Parts, Geraldine Tire, Great Buck Lodge, Hollywood 10 Cinemas in Scottsboro, James’ BBQ, Jan Peppers Tax Service, Keith Andrews, Liberty Bank, Magnolia Salon, Marie Wade, Mike Scott, Modern Poultry, Nana’s Treasures, Plunkett’s Towing & Wrecker, Quaylene Allen, Regina Anderson, Sand Mountain Muffler, Sand Mountain Window Tinting, Sandy Gilbert, Scrap Dogs, Southeastern Machine, Target Pest Control, Tickled Pink, 3kbugs Custom Designs, Wal-Mart, Mayor Ables and Town Council.
