When Lee Buffington started his business 24 years ago, he really thought it was just a job to earn money while going to Medical School.

He started mowing yards the summer he graduated Fort Payne High School as a side job while he attended Northeast Alabama Community College.

Still mowing yards during his second year of college, Lee realized he really enjoyed what he did and was making more than enough to make it his full-time career.

So, Lee began learning everything he could about horticulture and landscaping, and his business, Turf Tamer, Inc., took off.

Turf Tamer is now a landscaping firm with a focus on commercial maintenance and landscaping including outdoor living spaces. Over the past 24 years, Lee has opened Turf Tamer offices in Huntsville and Chattanooga, while keeping his home office right here in Fort Payne, Alabama.

Lee has a passion for his business and community. His wife, Crystal, is a Fort Payne High School graduate, and his three children attend school in the Fort Payne City School System. His daughter Hannah is a freshman and plays on the High School Softball team and is really good, you may have seen her name in the paper. His two sons are active in sports as well, J.P. is in fourth grade and Patrick is in third.

Lee’s approach to family and work seems to be “give it your all and do your very best.” He takes pride in the growth and accomplishments of his children and his employees. In fact, Lee wants to see more people on the team simply because he wants to create more opportunities for his staff. With about 100 associates, mostly long-term dedicated team members, Lee feels like Turf Tamer is in a position of continuously bringing some of those team members into leadership roles. He believes proper training and encouragement can cultivate great employees to be leaders in organizations.

My favorite title at Turf Tamer is the director of First Impressions. YES! We all need to make an awesome first impression because you only get one shot, and it’s so very important. Turf Tamer, we appreciate your membership with the Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce.
