A former Rainsville Police Department patrolman was arrested for theft on Thursday.
John Casey Jones was terminated following a special called meeting by the Rainsville City Council, where a hearing for the “good name and character of a city employee” was held.
According to Rainsville Police Chief Kevin Smith, the department received a formal complaint against Jones on Oct. 28, 2018. After review, Smith said he immediately contacted the State Bureau of Investigation.
Jones was taken into custody after the meeting on Thursday and booked into the DeKalb County Detention Center at 6:12 p.m.
An official report from the police department was released Thursday night.
“On the evening of January 3, 2019, Jones was arrested by State Bureau Agents and charged with theft of property second degree,” the release said. “Chief Smith and the Rainsville Police Department appreciate the prompt investigation, the time and attention that was devoted by the State Bureau of Investigation in this matter.”
Smith declined any further comments on the case.
As reported on the sheriff’s office website, www.dekalbcounty sheriff.org, Jones was released on a $7,500 bail at approximately 7:30 p.m. that same night.
Smith said Jones had been an employee of the police department since May 2017.
