Helen Irene Lucas

Helen Irene Lucas, 96, of Fort Payne passed away Sunday, January 12, 2020.  She was born December 14, 1923 to the late James William Riley Fowler and Della Naomi Gaddis Fowler.  Mrs. Lucas was both an RN and a CRNA.  She was head of In Service Education at Princeton Baptist Medical Center before transferring in 1980 to DeKalb Regional Medical Center as Director of Nursing where she served until 1984.  During her nursing career she received multiple awards and in October 2019 was awarded the Courage to Care Award from Samford University Ida Moffett School of Nursing.

Mrs. Lucus was an active member of First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Golden Circle as well as serving in various ministries such as Bread of Life.  She lived her life to serve other people.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church with Rev. Marshall Henderson and Dr. Pat McFadden officiating.  Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. hour of service.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Samford University Ida B. Moffett School of Nursing or First Baptist Church of Fort Payne.

She is survived by her nieces, Cecilia Pierce and husband, Michael and Diane Simms and husband, Stewart; nephew Don Lucas and wife, Regina; and grand-nephew Scott Pierce.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Harold Lucas and sister, Esther Weona Morgan.
