We do not share the views of the Democrat-Reporter

Above is the unsigned editorial in the February 14, 2019 edition of the Democrat-Reporter in Linden, Alabama titled ‘Klan needs to ride again’ where Editor and Publisher Goodloe Sutton calls for the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan to attack Democrats in their homes. The West Alabama newspaper’s membership in the Alabama Press Association has been suspended as of this week.

You may have already heard on the news or read about a recent newspaper editorial that calls for the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan.

Goodloe Sutton, the publisher and editor of The Democrat-Reporter in Linden, Alabama, said he stands by his unsigned editorial piece last week that was against “Democrats in the Republican Party and Democrats” and called for the return of the most infamous white supremacist group in the nation’s history.

Rightful outrage has swept the country, bringing the Alabama newspaper to the spotlight.

The Fort Payne Times-Journal does not agree with or condone the acts of violence and disregard for civil rights towards any group of people that were expressed in Sutton’s editorial.

The Fort Payne Times-Journal’s president and publisher, Tricia Dunne, is an active board member of the Alabama Press Association.

The APA released a statement this week saying Sutton’s newspaper will have their APA membership suspended.

Below is the full public statement from the APA:

“The APA Executive Committee met by conference call today to address a recent editorial written by The Democrat-Reporter Publisher Goodloe Sutton.

See below a letter to Goodloe and a public statement drafted by APA General Counsel Dennis Bailey issuing a censure of Goodloe Sutton for the content of the editorial, and suspending the membership of the newspaper with intent to bring the matter before the full membership of the association at the next meeting.

This will be sent to all APA members shortly and also to the various news organizations that have requested comments from us throughout the day.

Dear Goodloe:

Because of your recent editorial advocating violence by the Ku Klux Klan, the Board of Directors of the Alabama Press Association is of the opinion that you have taken action which has brought disgrace upon newspapers in Alabama and the profession. Therefore, the Board has voted to censure you. Furthermore, The Democrat-Reporter has, effective immediately, been suspended as a member of the Alabama Press Association. The members have a right under the bylaws to address the question of expulsion of the newspaper at our next membership meeting.

The Alabama Press Association Board of Directors voted today to censure Goodloe Sutton and suspend the association membership of The Democrat-Reporter. The members have a right under the bylaws to address the question of expulsion of the newspaper at our next membership meeting.”

Our View is the opinion of the Times-Journal’s editorial board, which includes Publisher Tricia Clinton-Dunne, Managing Editor Kayla Beaty and Business Manager Erin Helton.

Thank you Tricia for sharing the actions taken by the association! Being a daughter of a former President/Publisher of The Times Journal, this kind of rhetoric and racism should always be censured!!
