Marquis Moorer: Tribute to slain Selma police officer

This is an opinion tribute cartoon.

Selma Police Officer Marquis Moorer, 25, was ambushed and killed while taking a meal break early Tuesday morning.

Excerpts from Carol Robinson’s report on titled, “Selma police officer fatally shot at his apartment, ‘significant other’ injured”:

Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said the shooting happened between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. when Moorer, who was on duty, stopped by his apartment at Selma Square Apartments for his lunch break.

“He was an outstanding officer,’’ Jackson said. “He took his job very seriously.”

Mayor James Perkins and Chief Kenta Fulford spoke Tuesday morning about Moorer’s death, asking for the community’s prayers.

“These interviews are never easy but it’s more difficult when it’s one of your own,’’ Fulford said. “The Selma Police Department is devastated and we’re asking the community for your prayers because it is time for it.”

“This morning is yet another tragic moment in our city,’’ Perkins said. “I’m really saddened over the murder of Officer Moorer.”

Peace and prayers to Officer Moorer’s family, friends and colleagues at the Selma Police Department.

Rest in peace, Marquis Moorer.
