Dusty Hill tribute: ZZ Top’s best bass-driven songs

This is an opinion tribute cartoon. The unexpected death of ZZ Top’s Dusty Hill hit me pretty hard, as it did a lot of folks, I reckon.

ZZ Top is one of my all time favorite bands, and I got a chance to meet the dudes several years ago. Got to hang out with them backstage. Heck, I even got to BE one of them. Seriously. That story is coming Sunday. In the meantime, what are your favorite bass-driven ZZ Top songs? You know what I’m talking about. Dusty’s bass is what Billy Gibbons describes as the “Bottom to the Top.”

Off the Top of my head, here are four of my favorite Dusty thunder-thumping tunes:

Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers (Tres Hombres)

Funky Dogs and Nasty Kings (Fandango)

El Diablo (Tejas)

Thug (Eliminator)

Here’s one random Top 10 list of Dusty Hill bass-driven tunes.

What’s your Top 10?

Rock in peace, Dusty Hill.
