From the Archives | Oct. 3, 1990

Some photos from the Oct. 3, 1990 edition of The Times-Journal, with Tracy York of Fort Payne enjoying a crisp fall day at Valley Head’s Winston Place and showcasing moments of fun from the DeKalb County VFW Agricultural Fair in Fort Payne. Thirty years later, the fair is still a blast.

Stories covered in the newspaper that week included a gathering of residents of Hammondville to organize resistance to a plan by the county to expand the Downer landfill, which was owned by Probate Judge Paul Thomas with a permit set to expire in 1992. The area was under a moratorium at the time forbidding the opening of any new landfill or expansion of existing service areas.

There was also an article about the City of Fort Payne calling on the Alabama Highway Department to explore installing a run-away truck ramp at Joe’s Truck Stop. Councilman David Hawkins said the city and state could not agree on who would pay for what part of the cost to install such a ramp.
