Editor,

I saw a suggestion on Facebook that Fort Payne needs cigarette receptacles in our downtown area. A few council members agreed. I can see where that would help, but I think it would be much better to ban cigarettes and vapes downtown. At our May 3rd First Saturday event I saw cigarettes, vapes, and cigars all downtown and there were much more outside the Coal and Iron building.

Rome, Georgia has banned smoking and vaping in their downtown area. I think that is what we should do, as well. If our council wants to improve litter downtown, banning would make much more sense. Banning would make downtown smell better and look better. It would also save city money from the receptacles and our workers wouldn't have to clean up the receptacles.

I hope our council will consider this.
