BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Jacksonville State junior guard Greg Tucker has been tabbed the Ohio Valley Conference's Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Tucker, a 6-foot-2 junior, scored a career-high 15 points in the Gamecocks' only contest last week. He was 5-for-10 shooting from the floor along with a perfect 3-for-3 night at the stripe. His five rebounds were second-most on the team as JSU outlasted Northern Colorado, 79-76.
It's the third time in four games Tucker has reestablished his scoring standard. He matched his previous best with 10 points on Dec. 5 against Jacksonville, then scored 11 two games later at Loyola Marymount.
The Charleston, Mo., native previously played at Mineral Area (Mo.) College, before arriving in Jacksonville this season. OVC honors are voted on by the league's Sports Information Directors. Tucker shares the honor with Morehead State's DeJuan Marrero.
Tucker becomes the second JSU player to be awarded this season, after Jared Hamilton was named the conference Freshman of the Week following the opening weekend of the season.
Tucker leads JSU next into a road test at Alabama, Tuesday night in Tuscaloosa. It will mark the 13th meeting between the two in-state schools, and the first since 2001. The Crimson Tide leads the overall series 11-1.
The Gamecocks are averaging 70.5 points per game entering their final non-conference game of the season, while UA is only putting up 66.2 per outing. The game is set to tip at 7 p.m. at Coleman Coliseum.
