The Fort Payne High School boys’ golf team are moving on to their Sub-State Tournament in Muscle Shoals on Monday after finishing third in their Sectional Tournament at Canebrake Golf Club in Athens.
“It wasn’t one of our better performances of the year,” Fort Payne head coach Nathan Wehunt said. “But our goal was to advance. We’re going to have to individually play better on Monday to advance to the State Finals but we are capable of putting up a much better score.”
Fort Payne’s score of 315 finished behind Muscle Shoals’ 293 and Hartselle’s 299. Athens carded a 321 and will also advance to the Sub-State round.
Dawson Garrett led the Wildcats again shooting a 1-under par 71 at Canebrake.
“Dawson is really playing great golf,” Wehunt said. “He was 3-under par, then bogeyed two of his last three holes but came through in the playoff.”
Garrett tied for the tournament’s lowest score with Hartselle’s Parker Wright, forcing both players to play a playoff hole.
Garrett shot a par and won the tournament’s low-medalist award when Wright bogeyed the hole.
Harrison Davis had some trouble putting on the course’s fast greens and carded a 76. Davis had a fast start with two birdies to start his round before trouble on the third hole forced him to settle for a double bogey.
Dylan Evans shot 82 for the round, Alex Mitchell scored an 86 and Jack Barker carded an 89.
The Sub-State Tournament tees off on Monday at 8 a.m. where the Wildcats will need a top-two finish to advance to the state finals.
“The top two teams and top two individuals will advance,” Wehunt explained. “We have beaten Hartselle this year, but have not played Muscle Shoals. If everyone plays well, we have a great opportunity to go to state. That has been our goal all season.”
Fort Payne’s Alexis Chambers will represent the girls’ team after qualifying for the Sub-State Tournament as an individual. She is scheduled to tee off at 11:10 a.m. on Monday.
