Fort Payne’s Elle Kate Patterson is heading to Muscle Shoals.
Patterson qualified as an individual for the sub-state golf tournament Tuesday at the Class 6A Sectionals at Scottsboro with a round of 78.
As a team Fort Payne came up just a little short of advancing to sub-state when they finished sixth out of 17 teams. The top-four teams advance, but Patterson’s score was good enough to be the No. 1 individual qualifier for the sub-state tournament.
“It was very big for her,” Fort Payne coach Jamie McClung said. “She’s just a freshman, and she’s returning to sub state. She has a very good chance to make it to the state tournament if she plays her game like she’s capable of.”
She started out on fire, getting her first eagle of her career on hole two. She then struggled on the next few holes but finished with the consistency she started with.
Alexis Chambers just barely missed advancing to sub state as well. She came up one stroke short with a round of 90.
As a team Fort Payne finished with an overall score of 281.
McClung said he’s proud of how far they came this year with the youth of the team.
“We’ve improved a lot,” McClung said. “Not a lot of people expected us to be this competitive. Next year I think we have a great chance to make it to sub state. We’re going to keep working and work harder this summer than we have in the past.”
The girls sub-state tournament will be next Tuesday at Cypress Lakes in Muscle Shoals.
