The Sand Mountain American 9-10-year-old all-stars got standout pitching from Summer Buckner and Meagan Seals on Wednesday night and defeated Piedmont 3-2 in the Dixie Softball District 4 Tournament at Rosalie.
With the win, the Americans pulled within one victory of the district championship and a trip to the state tournament beginning July 15 at Scottsboro. The Americans will face either Sand Mountain National or Piedmont in the finals beginning tonight at 6.
The Nationals or Piedmont would have to defeat the Americans twice to advance. The Americans draw players from Ider, Skyline and Section.
Buckner pitched two innings against Piedmont and earned the win. She struck out four. Seals worked 2 1/3 innings. She fanned six and picked up the save.
Seals also contributed a two-run triple.
Samantha Dickerson, Katie Ledwell and Nikki Blansit all went 1-for-1 for the Americans. Dickerson's totals included a walk.
MONDAY: The Americans defeated the Nationals 16-1 in the tournament opener Monday.
Makayla Kirby (double, walk) and Olivia Dobbins (two doubles, walk) both went 3-for-3 for the Americans. Caitlin Terrell was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Seals pitched two innings and earned the win.

The Sand Mountain Nationals scored eight runs in the first inning and seven in the second in the winner's bracket of 7-8 division Tuesday.
The Nationals advanced to the finals and will face either Piedmont or North Jackson tonight at 6. The Piedmont/North Jackson winner would have to defeat the Nationals twice to advance.
The Nationals draw players from Rosalie, Section and Pisgah.
Chloe Womack (three singles), Kennedy Barron (single, double), Leigha Kirby (triple, double), Shalyn Smith (single, double) and Dailey Hanenburg (double, triple) were leading hitters for the Nationals.
MONDAY: The Nationals defeated Sand Mountain American 15-4 in three inning in the opening-round Monday.
Womack (double, triple), Barron (double, triple), Carley Bolt (single, homer) and Jaden Burgess (two homers) paced the Nationals.
The Americans, who draw players from Ider, North Sand Mountain and Skyline, fell to North Jackson in an elimination game Tuesday.

Sand Mountain American scored the winning run in the sixth inning of the 11-12 division opener Monday.
Baylee Easton (two singles, run), Kelly Hale (triple), Crystal McElhaney (double, run), Haley Rollins (single, RBI), Payton Davidson (double, RBI, run) and Kimbrelin Still (single) were among the top hitters for the Americans.
Deanna Meadows pitched a complete game and struck out 11 for the winners.
