No. 3 Lady Bears finish runner-up in area tourney, advance to regionals

Crimson Wells hit home runs in both of Plainview’s wins over Geraldine and Sylvania in the 3A, Area 15 Tournament.

The Plainview Lady Bears are moving on to the 3A North Regionals in Florence next week after finishing runner-up in the 3A, Area 15 Tournament behind Pisgah.

The No. 3-ranked Lady Bears fell twice to the No. 2-ranked Lady Eagles in the tournament. Plainview advanced by defeating both Geraldine and Sylvania. Their matchup with the Lady Rams needed 11 innings for a winner to be decided.

Here are recaps of the Lady Bears two tournament wins over Geraldine and Sylvania:

Plainview jumped ahead in their postseason opener in the bottom of the first with help from the long ball when Crimson Wells launched a 2-run shot over the left-field wall.

The Lady Bears had their biggest rally two innings later in the third. That rally started with a single from Tobi Trotter. She stole second and went to third on a Geraldine error before scoring on a groundout from Wells.

Elaine Puckett then walked and Krimson Kidd singled. Tessa Word then drove in Puckett with a single and Kidd scored while Jayla Gravitt reached on an error to make the score 5-0.

Geraldine then walked in a run, which capped off Plainview’s rally.

The Lady Bears added one run in the fourth on a sac fly from Puckett and plated their final run in the sixth on another sac fly from Wells.

Wells finished 1-for-1 with her 2-run homer and a pair of sac flies, giving her four RBIs in the win.

Trotter and Kenzi Traylor had two hits each and Mia Tidmore, Kidd, Word and Gravitt all had one hit each.

Lily Boswell was dominant from the pitcher’s circle and fired a 3-hit shutout. She struck out a dozen and walked one batter in seven innings.

The Lady Bears got off to another fast start at the plate in their win-or-go-home matchup with the Lady Rams.

Plainview got on the board first in the top of the first after Tobi Trotter smacked a 1-out single to left field. Sylvania committed a 2-base error on the play, allowing Trotter to move to third. She then scored a batter later when Kenzi Traylor hit a sac fly to right field to make the score 1-0.

Both teams stranded a pair of runners on base in the second inning before Sylvania bounced back to tie the game in the third.

That bottom half of the third started with a single from Anna Farmer. She moved to second on a groundout from Bethany Davis and scored when Riley Wisner followed with a 2-out, RBI single to right field to knot the score at 1-all.

That tie didn’t last for long as Plainview took back their 1-run lead in the top of the fourth.

Wells led off the fourth with a double and later scored from third on a groundout from Krimson Kidd to put Plainview back in front 2-1.

Sylvania then immediately answered back and tied the game once again when Kylie Moree led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot over the center-field wall.

The Lady Rams had chances to score the go-ahead run in the sixth and seventh innings, but came up short on both occasions.

Wisner led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, but ended up stranded at third.

The Lady Rams then nearly avoided extras in the bottom of the seventh after they loaded the bags with two outs, but Plainview pitcher Lily Boswell struck out Sylvania’s next batter to send the game to extras.

The Lady Rams stranded two runners in the eighth and Plainview’s lineup did the same in the ninth.

Both pitchers retired the side quickly in the 10th before another long ball helped decide a winner in the 11th.

After a Kenzi Traylor double led off the top of the 11th, Crimson Wells drove a 1-1 pitch over the center-field wall for a 2-run homer that made the difference in the game.

Boswell retired the side in order in the bottom of the 11th to seal the win.

Boswell pitched all 11 innings for Plainview, where she struck out 13, walked two and gave up two earned runs on eight hits. She fired first-pitch strikes to 35 of the 46 batters she faced.

Wells finished batting 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Word batted 2-for-5 and Kidd and Traylor had one RBI each.

Lauren Womack pitched all 11 innings for Sylvania, where she struck out seven and walked two.
