'Cats earn pair of top-5 finishes at Aggie Invitational

Fort Payne’s track and field teams won six events Friday at Albertville’s Aggie Invitational meet and earned top-five overall finishes in fields of 15-plus teams.

The Lady Wildcats placed second in a field of 15, only trailing Alexandria. The boys’ team placed fifth in a field of 17 teams at the meet.

The Lady Wildcats earned gold in four events Friday.

Anahi Barboza, Gracie Groat and Mollie Sanderson took the top three spots in the 800-meter run.

Barboza won the event with a time of 2:34.73 and Groat and Sanderson took second and third less than a second behind Anahi.

Maggie Groat won both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. In the 100, she clocked a 15.61 and teammate Madisyn Hill finished second in 16.97 seconds. In the 300, Maggie won with a time of 47.22 seconds and Madi Wallace placed second in 48.38 seconds. Wallace also earned silver in the 100-meter dash after clocking a time of 12.96 seconds.

Brooklyn Barksdale won the pole vault after clearing seven and a half feet.

Aylin Vega placed third in the 1,600-meter run in 5:51.05. Madelyn Jackson placed fifth in 5:55.35 and Sanderson was seventh in 5:58.67.

The Lady ‘Cats 4x100-meter relay team of Arianna Johnson, Libba Sheppard, Madisyn Hill and Andrea Bailey placed second in 53 seconds.

The 4x800 team of Anahi Barboza, Aylin Vega, Abigail Vega and Kailee Garcia also placed second in 10:45.08.

Jordan Strogav placed third in the high jump with a leap of four feet, eight inches and Gracie Groat finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 30 feet, nine inches.

Isabelle Goggans placed second in the javelin with a throw that went 105 feet, five inches.

The boys team won two events. Matthew Shaddix earned gold in the 300-meter hurdles in 40.96 seconds. Their other win came from Shane Freeman in the shot put. His throw of 40 feet, nine inches earned him first place in the event.

Shaddix also placed second in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.55 seconds.

Ben Anderson placed second in the 800-meter run in 2:05.47 and trailed that event’s winner by three-tenths of a second. Anderson also earned silver in the 1,600-meter run in 4:48.59.

The boys’ 4x100-meter relay team of Jack McGullion, Shaddix, Ashton Brown and Soloman Strong placed second with a time of 45.24 seconds.

The Wildcats will head north this weekend to participate in the McCallie Mid-South Track Classic in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
