Chambers to keep swinging away at Birmingham-Southern

FORT PAYNE — Fort Payne senior golfer and valedictorian Alexis Chambers signed a scholarship Wednesday to continue her education and golfing career at Birmingham-Southern College.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity,” Chambers said, “I’m glad that I won’t just be going for school. It will be nice to have an extra cirricular activity in college as well.”

With her college destination decided, Chambers said she has one goal left to acheive out of three that she wanted to get out of the way in her senior year.

“I had three goals going into this year,” Chambers said. “I wanted to win the Distinguised Young Women of Alabama Award. I didn’t win, but I was in the top eight and got a self-expression award, so that was really good. Another goal was being valedictorian. I’ve got a checkmark on that. Now I want to win a golf state championship.”

Fort Payne golf coach Nathan Wehunt is confident that Chambers will thrive at the collegiate level.

“She’s going to be successful,” Wehunt said. “She’s very self-motivated, she gets out there and works on what she needs to work on and she’s that model student-athlete that anyone would like to coach.”
